Spend the Night at Greens Ledge Lighthouse: A Coastal Connecticut Experience Like No Other
There’s something about the Connecticut coast—its salt-stung air, tidy towns, and blue-gray horizon—that slows your pulse and stirs the soul. But if you’re searching for a shoreline experience that goes beyond the ordinary, look to the sea itself.
Just off the coast of Norwalk in Long Island Sound, the Greens Ledge Lighthouse rises like a sentry from the water, its classic red-and-white tower braving wind and wave since 1902. Today, thanks to the nonprofit Greens Ledge Light Preservation Society, this still-active lighthouse offers a rare and romantic escape: overnight stays in the keeper’s quarters, where maritime history meets New England luxury.

A Beacon of History and Hospitality
Originally built to warn ships of the submerged reef near Norwalk and Darien, Greens Ledge Light has been lovingly restored over the past decade. Guests who step inside the iron tower will find nods to its past—original Fresnel lens elements, porthole views, and spiral stairs leading to the lantern room—as well as all the comforts of modern living.
The three-level interior features nautical décor, crisp linens, and cozy sitting areas that invite you to sip your coffee while watching boats drift past. There’s no WiFi, no TV, and no distractions—just the hush of the Sound and the occasional call of gulls overhead.

Your Private Island Escape
Accessed by private boat from the Rowayton harbor, Greens Ledge Lighthouse feels miles away from the mainland bustle. Guests are greeted dockside by a guide who shares the lay of the land—or sea, as it were. From there, it’s a quick climb to your temporary home among the waves.
The lighthouse accommodates up to six guests and includes a kitchenette, bathroom, and sun deck where you can take in a 360-degree view stretching from the Connecticut shoreline to the distant skyline of Manhattan.
Come sunset, the light casts a golden glow across the water, and by nightfall, you’ll fall asleep to the gentle lapping of waves against the base. It’s as close to sleeping on the sea as most of us will ever get.

Planning Your Stay
Stays at Greens Ledge Lighthouse are limited and typically book months in advance. The overnight experience is available seasonally, from late spring through early fall, and all proceeds go toward the continued preservation of the lighthouse.
What to Know Before You Go:
Bring your own meals (there’s a fridge, but no restaurant).
Pack light—access is by boat only.
Expect solitude: the experience is intentionally unplugged.
