So, your kid has caught the hockey bug, and you're thinking, “What now?” Well, you’re in luck—Connecticut has an amazing hockey scene that’s perfect for young skaters to get started, and even a few chances for you to yell your heart out on the sidelines (it’s almost as therapeutic as yoga, I swear).

Whether your child dreams of being the next Wayne Gretzky or just wants to have fun on the ice, Connecticut offers a variety of programs for kids at every skill level.

College Hockey: Where Connecticut Shines

Let’s fast forward a few years—maybe your little one will end up playing college hockey right here in Connecticut! We have some powerhouse college hockey programs that are not only fun to watch but can also inspire young players to dream big.

NEW HAVEN

Yale Hockey

Ah, Yale hockey. A program rich in tradition, and their men's team won the NCAA championship in 2013. Watching a game at the iconic Ingalls Rink, aka the "Yale Whale," is an experience in itself. It’s a great opportunity to show your young skaters what hard work on the ice can lead to, plus you'll have an excuse to visit the fabulous New Haven pizza joints afterward.

Women’s Hockey

STORRS

University of Connecticut

UCONN’s hockey program has been on the rise in recent years, especially after joining the Hockey East conference. The Toscano Family Ice Forum is a state-of-the-art 2,600-seat ice hockey arena on the Storrs campus. The arena opened in January 2023. UCONN is serious about its hockey, and their games always bring the energy—perfect for little hockey fans to soak in the fast pace of college-level play.

NORTHFORD

Quinnipiac University

The Quinnipiac Bobcats are consistently ranked among the top teams in college hockey, and for good reason. Their men's team has made several appearances in the NCAA tournament and even claimed a national title in 2023. Watching a game at their rink in Hamden is an absolute thrill—trust me, the atmosphere is contagious. It’s a great way to inspire young players to keep aiming high.

Bridgeport Islanders

The Bridgeport Islanders, the AHL affiliate of the New York Islanders, are another great local option for catching some pro hockey. The games are exciting, and it’s easy to make a day of it—grab lunch in downtown Bridgeport, then head to the rink for some hockey. The team is full of up-and-coming players looking to make their mark in the NHL, and it's always fun to watch their journey.
